Bluebonnets are a Texas hill country icon and so you would think they wouldn’t be hard to find. And in some years, that’s true. However, they greatly depend on the amount of rain we have had during winter and when it’s low, it can be much harder.
You also need to know where to go that’s safe and NOT on someone’s property. Please don’t trespass, this is Texas, you could get shot (seriously).
However, there is hope! There are a lot of people who work very hard to find the flowers and they are willing to share. Which is why I’ve rounded up the best resources to find bluebonnets in the Texas Hill Country.
If you want to find those iconic views, follow these websites and resources. I follow them yearly to help me plan my mini sessions (yes, shameless plug).

Resources to Find Bluebonnets in Texas
1. Head to the Right City
There’s a few places in the Texas Hill Country that basically always have bluebonnets. In fact, Ennis, is considered the bluebonnet capitol of Texas and has a festival every year. However, I’ve also had luck in the following cities (and they all have “wildflower watch” websites I’ve linked below):
- Fredericksburg
- Marble Falls
- Boerne
- San Marcos
- Burnet (another capitol of bluebonnets)
- Willow City Loop (not a city but a drive north of Fredericksburg that is lovely)
2. Head to a Guaranteed Spot
Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg plants, nurtures, and grows wild flowers. If you want to make sure you get some photos, head here and you’ll find it.
3. Follow Certain Blogs
There are people who spend time driving around looking for fields of flowers and for that I am grateful. Follow these blogs to find the best spots.
4. My Go To Places in the City
These are the first places I check in San Antonio for bluebonnets. I watch them like a hawk so you’ll probably see me out there if you go! Feel free to say hello.
- McAllister Park usually has a field of bluebonnets. However, there are times when I have not found any, so this is hit or miss but one I do check yearly.
- Bullis County Park also gets a few bluebonnets and is usually a good place for other types of wildflowers.
- Rolling Oaks Mall has an open field that gets a good amount of bluebonnets. It is my favorite place for mini sessions but can get busy with photographers on the weekends.
These are all the sources I follow every year to find the best patches for my clients. The key with bluebonnets is to act fast. Once you find a patch, get your photos done, it could be gone the very next day.
